COVID-19: GP vocational training and telehealth webinars

We are here and we want to help in any way we can.

We know each of our registrars, supervisors and practice managers are in unprecedented and difficult times and we are here to help you and adapt with the changes. There have been some immediate provisions put in place to ensure flexibility is adopted when and where it is needed in relation to GP vocational training.

Supervision and teaching requirements

We understand there may be concerns about in-practice teaching, supervision requirements and completion of assessments. If you are having difficulties in maintaining your supervision and teaching requirements, please contact WAGPET. We will work with you to have alternative models and additional supervisors approved rapidly. Alternative models may include increased provision for phone supervision and group sessions for in-practice teaching.

WAGPET education and college examinations

All education with WAGPET is now provided virtually, including all regional education days. In addition, all remaining face-to-face workshops for semester 1, 2020 have been cancelled. External Clinical Teaching visits can still occur in the practice if both the ECT visitor and the practice support this, otherwise, we will set up a webcam video-link to make this happen.

The RACGP has postponed the May 2020 OSCE and July 2020 written examinations. The RACGP April 2020 Mock OSCE has also been cancelled. The ACRRM examinations are still planned to continue and WAGPET is working with ACRRM candidates to ensure they have access to exam support. Please refer to the ACRRM and RACGP websites for further details regarding 2020 examinations.

We’ve extended our opening hours

Effective immediately, WAGPET is open to take enquiries from 7am – 7pm Monday to Friday. You do have a dedicated program training advisor to assist you. They are constantly monitoring emails and we have an on-call after hours team too. The after-hours number is (08) 9473 8200.

Flexibility with training related policies

Registrars have more flexibility with their training time requirements as the impacts of COVID-19 are viewed as extenuating and unforeseen circumstances. These flexibilities could include extensions of training time, provision of leave if required and deferral of the commencement of training. Variations to training location obligations will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Both colleges have put out FAQs regarding the impact of COVID-19 on GP education and training. Please contact us if you have specific questions not covered here and we’ll be able to assist you.
