WAGPET, WA’s sole provider of the Australian General Practice Training program, has welcomed in-principle support from the GP colleges for the WA Rural Generalist Program.
On the back of a funding commitment from the Federal Government of $62 million for the National Rural Generalist Pathway, WAGPET has unveiled its plans to the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine and Royal Australian College of General Practitioners Rural to train rural generalists in WA in direct alignment with the colleges’ curricula and rural generalist objectives.
WAGPET CEO, Adj Prof Janice Bell said the WA Rural Generalist (WARG) program will provide integrated, comprehensive, accessible and responsive training to a growing cohort of general practitioners to address the gap in health care to the people in WA rural, regional and remote communities.
“WAGPET has a contractual obligation to train up to 30 rural generalists each year and we now have a program mobilised to achieve that.”
“And pleasingly, both GP colleges have said they are looking forward to working with us to support the implementation.”
“The WARG Program provides an economically viable workforce model and primary health care solution for WA. A growing body of evidence suggests that a generalist workforce model compared to specialist-based care provides significant cost savings and a healthier community,” Adj Prof Bell said.
The WARG Program builds on the successes and challenges of rural generalist programs in other jurisdictions and is adapted to provide a more regionally relevant and contextualised approach for WA. You can view the WARG website HERE

Western Australia General Practice Education and Training (WAGPET) is the sole provider of the federally funded Australian General Practice Training program (AGPT) in WA. The program takes doctors seeking to specialise as general practitioners through to fellowship – the highest recognition for a GP.
Funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health, WAGPET delivers training and education to over 600 registrars through a structured program, supported by a highly-skilled network of medical educators and supervisors. Each registrar is placed in accredited medical facilities in WA’s regional towns and metropolitan locations.
